We travel with them as they grow up in countries they love, are forced to flee due to violence and war, cross borders to live a life on the periphery in refugee camps, and end up being among the lucky 1% of refugees who ever resettle to a country that gives them a pathway to citizenship. American Refuge was selected by North Carolina Humanities as a 2024 North Carolina Reads Book and is a powerful story of North Carolina's welcoming communities, its resilient newcomers, and the remarkable capacity of higher education institutions to be good neighbors.

Refund Policy

To receive a refund, a written request must be received 3 business days before the first class. Scott Fitzgerald

In honor of our country’s semiquincentennial birthday this year, it seems appropriate to read a work that has been considered by some to carry the banner “Great American Novel.” Of course, there are other candidates, but F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel The Great Gatsby is one work that has been described as such and has become a mainstay of high school English curricula as well as a favorite for adaptation on both stage and screen. In fact, the most recent iteration opens at the Tanger in October. The Great Gatsby has everything a nominee for “Great American Novel” requires: captivating and charismatic characters; iconic settings amidst the backdrop of the Roaring ‘20s; and, at its heart, essentially American themes, with the rags-to-riches story of a mysterious self-made man. All of this, as well as romance and its memorable, lush, evocative prose, makes The Great Gatsby a work well worth rereading, especially if high school was, in fact, the last time you read it.

Refund Policy

To receive a refund, a written request must be received 3 business days before the first class. However, pollinator populations across the globe are in decline, threatening ecosystem stability and food security worldwide. Many factors have been associated with recent pollinator declines, among them habitat loss and the spread of harmful pests and diseases. At UNCG’s new Plant and Pollinator Center, we are actively expanding our efforts to address critical threats to pollinators. In addition to expanding our work in pollinator-focused research and innovation, we are growing our outreach and educational programming in order to teach the local community and the next generation of scientists about the importance and exciting world of pollinators. We are also actively supporting North Carolina’s ~500 species of native pollinators through local habitat restoration projects. In this presentation, attendees will learn about the Plant & Pollinator Center’s recent efforts to address economically and ecologically important issues such as global food security and environmental sustainability. Catherine Morland’s literary diet of Gothic literature has colored her view of the world, leading to humorous misunderstandings and comic mishaps. Northanger Abbey, completed in 1803 but not published until after Austen’s death in 1818, is both a satire of popular Gothic literature as well as a novel of social survival, as Catherine, naive and innocent at the start, learns critical life lessons as she navigates the city of Bath’s social scene and rises above the narrator’s opening assessment of her. Drawing on recent archaeological excavations at Lot 38, we move beyond the simple aesthetics of earthenware to reveal a "community of practice" where faith and trade were inseparable. Participants will discover how master potters like Rudolph Christ introduced cutting-edge technologies to produce innovative wares like faience and stoneware to remain competitive in a post-Revolutionary marketplace. We will look beyond the master artisans to unearth the stories of apprentices, women, and enslaved craftsmen like Peter Oliver, whose skills were recognized even as social structures constrained them. By examining waster sherds, innovative kiln designs, kiln furniture, and detailed church records, we will see how these individuals navigated Salem’s "moral economy," blurring the lines between the sacred and the secular. This series offers a unique window into how the objects of everyday life—from coffee mugs to tobacco pipes—profoundly shaped the people who made and used them.

Week 1: The Theocratic Capital: Faith and the "Moral Economy" in Wachovia.
Week 2: Traditional Foundations: Gottfried Aust and the Birth of Salem Pottery.
Week 3: The Innovator: Rudolph Christ and the Expansion onto Lot 38.
Week 4: A Community of Practice: Apprentices, Journeymen, and Households.
Week 5: Agency and Inequality: The Remarkable Journey of Peter Oliver.
Week 6: The Science of Firing: Kiln Technology and "Unruly" Materials.
Week 7: Divestment and Continuity: The End of the Congregation Pottery.

Refund Policy

To receive a refund, a written request must be received 3 business days before the first class. This is different from art therapy. Sudha Shreeniwas and Lia Miller have collaborated on Arts on Prescription through a community-engaged research partnership. We focus on older adults. Arts participation is highlighted as an effective, non-pharmacological, pleasant, lower-cost approach to enhance mental well-being, reduce loneliness, and prevent cognitive decline. Studies show it improves quality of life by connecting patients to creative activities, fostering purpose and social connection, and reducing emergency room visits. ‘Arts’ are widely defined, comprising a wide range of forms including active participation (e.g. painting, playing an instrument, etc.) and receptive participation (e.g. attending a play or concert). This approach is a promising add-on to traditional healthcare at a time of increasing costs and a growing older population, many of whom face loneliness, isolation, and chronic disease. However, a recent review published by Sudha and her team shows that older persons are not the specific focus of much existing research, and study designs are not strong enough to draw robust conclusions and underpin practice and policy recommendations.

Refund Policy

To receive a refund, a written request must be received 3 business days before the first class.
