The World at War: Nuremberg, Dunkirk, Pearl Harbor

The Second World War was a huge, complex global conflict, the largest and most destructive in human history. All the great powers participated, investing economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities in pursuit of total war. World War II has always been a fertile source for movies. Join us on wintry Sunday afternoons to view and discuss three superb films devoted to the emergence of Nazi Germany and the war it started.

Movie: Triumph of the Will (1935)

Hitler commissioned Leni Riefenstahl to film the 1934 Nazi Party rally in Nuremberg, which was attended by 700,000 Nazi faithful. Hitler was the unofficial executive producer. This stunning, horrifying movie set new standards for documentary film-making while masterfully promoting the Nazi vision of Germany under Hitler. Triumph of the Will, one of most powerful propaganda movies of all time, effectively demonstrates the profoundly threatening military nature of Nazi Germany.
