Using Interpersonal Process Recall in Clinical Supervision to Enhance Supervisees’ Multicultural Awareness
The Department of Counseling and Educational Development at UNC Greensboro has developed a series of continuing education courses for clinical supervisors and other helping professionals to meet continuing education requirements set forth by the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE) (a corporate affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors) and state licensure boards.
This asynchronous module describes and illustrates the use of Interpersonal Process Recall to enhance supervisees’ cultural awareness. Dr. Nathaniel N. Ivers, Ph.D., LCMHC (NC), LPC (TX), NCC, Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Counseling, Wake Forest University, draws from his varied multicultural experiences, including serving as bilingual counselor with the Spanish-speaking, immigrant, Latinx population in North Carolina, and clinical supervisor to (1) describe the goals and steps of IPR, (2) explain the unique “inquirer” role of the supervisor in IPR, and (3) model the IPR process in a simulated supervision session. Participants watch Dr. Ivers’ videos, complete required readings and a reflective exercise, and take a quiz at the conclusion of Dr. Ivers’ presentation. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive 10 contact hours of continuing education credit (all multicultural supervision hours).
UNC Greensboro – Department of Counseling and Educational Development has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 3014. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. UNC Greensboro – Department of Counseling and Educational Development is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
Learning Goals
Participants will be prepared to:
- Define multicultural awareness and Interpersonal Process Recall.
- Compare Interpersonal Process Recall to other supervision models in terms of developing self-awareness and multicultural awareness.
- Discuss how supervisors can prepare supervisees for Interpersonal Process Recall interventions.
- Analyze the supervisor’s role in Interpersonal Process Recall, particularly how it differs from traditional supervisor roles.
- Examine how Interpersonal Process Recall can be used in supervision to enhance supervisees’ multicultural awareness.
- Identify Interpersonal Process Recall questions that you could implement in your work with supervisees to broach topics related to culture.
- Describe situations in which Interpersonal Process Recall would be contraindicated, as well as ethics to consider when using interpersonal process recall.

Refund Policy
Participants who have registered for this CE course can receive a partial refund if the participant has not viewed any of the program material on the MOODLE site. No refund is available for participants who have accessed or viewed the program material on the MOODLE site.
You have 180 days from your registration date to finish this course. Once you have been enrolled for 180 days you will be removed from the training and no longer have access to the materials.
Please note: Once you begin the modules you cannot get a refund. If applicable, participants can be granted a partial refund of $111 which constitutes the registration fee minus a $28 service charge. No other refunds are offered.
Extension Policy
Extension requests must be submitted prior to the 180th day of enrollment. A 30-day extension may be granted at that time if the request is warranted.
