UNCG’s Center for New North Carolinians exists to build bridges and facilitate access for immigrants and refugees in Guilford County and the surrounding areas. We do this through Community-based outreach initiatives and programming to help immigrants and refugees build their capacity to navigate complex systems in their new home.
The CNNC is celebrating 25 years this year! In April 2001, the UNCG Center for New North Carolinians was established by the University of North Carolina’s Board of Governors. It stemmed from a task force initiated by Chancellor Patricia Sullivan in 1997 in response to a significant influx of immigrants settling in the state. The task force, comprising faculty, staff, and community representatives, advocated for improved access to education, healthcare, and job training for these newcomers. Chancellor Sullivan advocated to the UNC Board of Governors and President Molly Broad, resulting in the establishment of the Center to address these needs. Led by Dr. Raleigh Bailey, the Center absorbed existing programs like the AmeriCorps ACCESS Program and the Immigrant Health Access Project, which focused on providing culturally appropriate services to immigrant communities. Today, the center serves over 1,400 refugees and immigrants each year through its programs and neighborhood community centers.
We invite you to join us in celebrating the impact the Center for New North Carolinians has had across the state and preparing for a future that sees Greensboro and North Carolina continue to be a place of welcome and belonging for our immigrant neighbors. We will spend the evening celebrating the immigrant community of Greensboro through music, dance, and the sharing of stories. Guests will hear the stories of guests of honor about their journey and how CNNC came alongside them as they made Greensboro their home. There will be a time of reflection about where the center has been and a look to its exciting future. This year, the gala will also host a silent auction and a post-gala afterparty full of music and dancing.
We hope to see you there and join us for this celebration of community and our future together.
