About this experience

Thursdays, 10:00 – 11:30 am
February 5 – March 12

As part of a growing list of explorations into the History of Rock Music and its many personalities, this lecture series will be the first in a new collection of adventures: The Icons of Rock Music. In each series, we will explore a collection of ground-breaking artists and bands, connected by a common theme or topic. Each lecture will then focus in depth on a single artist or band that made a significant contribution to the theme.

Our first Icons series will take us across the pond to the United Kingdom. But this isn’t just any look into the great rock music England had to offer. In this series, we will explore a sampling of rock royalty – literally. Throughout the history of rock music, there have been a small handful of elite artists whose contributions to the kingdom were so rockin’ that they were actually knighted by the queen. These rockers in shining guitar strings defended crown and country with their brilliance and innovation while carving out a permanent place in the world culture that is rock music.

But wait, there’s more! On February 14, 2026 (Valentine’s Day!), the Tanger Center for the Performing Arts will present a concert by the Greensboro Symphony: Music of the Knights, featuring music by two of our royal rockers – Elton John and Paul McCartney. This lecture series is the perfect opportunity to hear their stories and get in the mood to hear some of their tunes at the concert. So, shine up your shield and sharpen your broadsword. Next stop: the majestic world of rock royalty! (Note: Course may contain offensive language and material.  It’s rock and roll!)

  1. Sir Paul McCartney
  2. Sir Elton John
  3. Sir Mick Jagger
  4. Sir Ray Davies
  5. Sir Van Morrison
  6. Sir Rod Stewart

This course is held in tandem with the 2025-26 season of the Greensboro Symphony at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts and provides a deeper appreciation for the music before an optional viewing of a symphony performance.  "The Music of the Knights" tickets are sold separately on the first day of class.  Limited tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
