For many centuries Europe from Italy to Scotland formed part of the Roman Empire. Roman dominion transformed native peoples and cultures, effectively Romanizing them. But by the 6th century Rome weakened and Romanized Europe gave way to new peoples and new cultures, marking the birth of a new Europe. Nevertheless, for the next millennium Roman connections persisted and helped to shape emerging Spanish, French, German, English and other emerging European identities. In this course we will follow the long story of the Roman impact on European peoples and cultures by examining Europe before Rome, Europe under Rome, and Europe after Rome.

  1. Europe before Rome
  2. Rome’s Conquest of Europe
  3. Romanizing Europe
  4. Europe: Peoples and Places after Rome
  5. Christian Europe and Rome
  6. Renaissance and Reformation Europe and Rome
