Research on participatory arts shows promise for improving adults' quality of life and well-being, from better cognitive function, memory, and self-esteem to reduced stress and increased social interaction.  This course will introduce you to painting, clay, and weaving for anyone interested in the visual arts. Try your hand at them all- no experience necessary! 

  1. Create with Clay – with step-by-step guidance on tools and techniques, students will use air-dry clay to construct unique coil vessels or sculptures.
  2. Acrylic Painting – student will be guided through the process of painting on canvas using this water-based, fast drying medium.
  3. Small Tapestry Weaving - Using a variety of materials, students will learn the basics of weaving and explore a variety of weaving techniques. 

 

Refund Policy

To receive a refund, a written request must be received 3 business days before the first class. A $25 processing fee will be deducted from the refund. Cancellation requests received less than 3 business days before the first class but before the second meeting will receive a 50% refund.  ALL written requests should be emailed to emeritus@spartanstrategiesinc.org or mailed to the address below.

Your Host

Vanita Bailey received a BS with a concentration in Fine Arts and Psychology from Towson State University in 1981 and a Master of Arts in Art Therapy from George Washington University in 1984. For more than 30 years, she worked as a clinical Art Therapist in military treatment facilities administering therapy to active duty service members and veterans with PTSD, chronic pain, and disabilities.

Multimedia artist Jennifer Donley was educated at the University of Georgia and Ohio University receiving a BFA in graphic design and illustration. She has shown her work in Ohio, North Carolina, and Georgia, and has taught students from 3 years to 90+.

Kathryn Gauldin works with a variety of materials, weaving and dyeing yarns and more, to create colorful and textural pieces. She holds a BA in Studio Art, studied weaving and textile art at Haywood Community College’s production craft program and Western Carolina University, and studied non-profit management at Duke University Nonprofit Management Program. She exhibits and presents artist residencies in the southeastern US.
