Tuesdays, 2:00 – 3:30 pm
October 13 – November 17
We might suppose that views of Nature composed of settings, topography—natural and built features—flora and fauna, seasons of the year, times of day and night would seem to be the most obviously desirable and least problematic subjects among the artistic genres. However, the history of art reveals that the genre of landscape has had a very uneven cultural presence and a critical reception that changes between censure and praise. Its fate has been determined by changing attitudes about its perceived merits, both as subject and techniques of execution.
Even though landscape has had its ups and downs (sorry, couldn't resist), one fact is beyond dispute: the genre has received the attention of first-rate artists who produced the dazzling works we shall be viewing and considering during our sessions. We will be examining works that conjure the most evocative vistas of waking dreams.

Richard Gantt (MA, UNC Chapel Hill; MFA, UNC Greensboro) retired from the UNC Greensboro School of Art, where he taught art history for more than 30 years. His many research interests include architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design of 17th-century France, and 17th and 18th-century architecture, urban planning, and nationalist agendas in early modern London. The area of concentration of his studio work for the MFA was in painting and drawing, specifically, landscape painting.
