How did we end up in a world shaped by political tension, powerful technology, environmental issues, and public health debates? This course takes a step back to look at the bigger picture. Each week, we’ll focus on one major issue—global politics, technology, the environment, and health—and explore how past people and events have led us to where we are now. We’ll look at how historic rivalries shaped domestic and global power struggles, how the Internet and artificial intelligence grew out of decades of innovation, how industrialization helped create today’s climate crisis, and how public health challenges like obesity and other preventable causes of death continue to plague our world. The course is designed for anyone curious about current events and how they connect to the past. Together, we’ll make sense of the headlines by understanding the history behind them.

  1. Politics – American Democracy, International Affairs, and the Global Order
  2. Technology - Social Media, Big Tech, A.I.
  3. Environment – Pollution, Recycling, Climate Change
  4. Health – Obesity, Disease, Vaccines
