Jazz music embodies self-expression, creativity, and the fight for civil rights. This genre is a gateway for learning how to listen to music and each other as humans. In this course, we will cover significant eras of jazz history (New Orleans/Origins, Swing, Bebop-Hardbop, and others). In addition, in-depth discussions on how jazz influenced American and world history will be presented. We will develop active listening skills to attain a deeper understanding and context of the selected recordings. Terminology of music and how to write about music will also be discussed and developed throughout the class.
