This spring let’s take a trip abroad with authors Henry James, Elizabeth Spencer, and Elizabeth Von Arnim as our guides. Our European tour will include three famous tales: James’s novella, Daisy Miller; Mississippi writer (and later Chapel Hill resident) Elizabeth Spencer’s novella, The Light in the Piazza; and Elizabeth Von Arnim’s short novel, The Enchanted April. In the two famous novellas by James and Spencer, we will explore with our American heroines, Daisy Miller (from New York) and mother and daughter, Margaret and Clara Johnson (from Winston-Salem), both Switzerland and Italy; and with Von Arnim meet a unique quartet of British women who, for an array of personal reasons, take up residence in a medieval castle on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Of course, our heroines quickly discover that a trip to Europe is not a romantic escape or simply about sightseeing. While on their travels all must navigate risk-filled situations and master game-playing with those they meet abroad. How do they fare? How are they changed forever by their European excursions? Come discover their fates on our literary springtime trip to Europe.

To receive a refund, a written request must be received 3 business days before the first class. A $25 processing fee will be deducted from the refund. Carolyn J. Brown (MA and Ph.D., UNC Greensboro) is a teacher, writer, editor, and independent scholar. Winner of the 1991 UNCG Dissertation Award, her areas of specialty are medieval, Renaissance and 18th-century literature. She is the author of five works of nonfiction, including award-winning biographies of Mississippi writers Eudora Welty and Margaret Walker. In addition, she has published articles in several peer-reviewed journals, most recently on Jane Austen. Brown sits on the board of the Jane Austen Society of North America, and is the chair of the Nominating Committee. She also is a member of UNCG’s Arts and Humanities Advancement Council and teaches continuing education classes in Chapel Hill.
