The World at War: Nuremberg, Dunkirk, Pearl Harbor
The Second World War was a huge, complex global conflict, the largest and most destructive in human history. All the great powers participated, investing economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities in pursuit of total war. World War II has always been a fertile source for movies. Join us on wintry Sunday afternoons to view and discuss three superb films devoted to the emergence of Nazi Germany and the war it started.
Movie: Dunkirk (2017)
The brilliant strategic success of German arms against the Anglo-French armies in May-June 1940 drove the British Expeditionary Force into a pocket on the Channel coast, where it appeared to be doomed. But the Royal Navy improvised a daring rescue in the face of concentrated Luftwaffe attacks and – with the help of hundreds of naval and civilian boats – saved 300,000 British and French soldiers. This epic, inspiring movie vividly captures the dramatic historical event. Christopher Nolan, the movie’s director and screenwriter, more recently directed and wrote the screenplay for Oppenheimer.
