This course is based on six films highlighting aspects of the Arab-Israeli Conflict that we will watch within a historical context. It is not strictly speaking a film class because we will not be concerned with issues of the director’s style, cinematography, etc. in these films (although those issues may certainly come up in the class and can be part of our discussion). Our main focus, however, will be on what these films can teach us about the Arab-Israeli Conflict from a cultural and historical point of view as depicted in film by those living through it. The films are mostly in Arabic and/or Hebrew but subtitled in English.

  1. “Paradise Now” (Palestine, 2005; 91 minutes); dir. by Hany Abu-Assad
  2. “The Other Son” (France, 2012; 110 minutes); dir. by Lorraine Lévy
  3. “Rock the Casbah” (Israel, 2012; 94 minutes); dir. by Yariv Horowitz
  4. “Omar” (Palestine, 2013; 96 minutes); dir. by Hany Abu-Assad
  5. “A.K.A. Nadia” (Israel, 2015; 115 minutes); dir. by Tova Ascher
  6. “The Teacher” (Palestine/UK, 2023; 115 minutes); dir. by Farah Nabuls
